A decade of lies: The US-funded biolab denial saga

Washington for years rejected Russian allegations of the existence of the secret program, before finally admitting it

Russia’s allegations that the US-funded clandestine biological laboratories near its borders – claims denied until recently by Washington – have remained a persistent flashpoint in the steadily deteriorating relationship between Russia and the West for nearly a decade.

The biolabs affair was revealed in a 2017 exposé by RT that questioned a shady US military tender seeking the genetic material of living Russians. Over the years, Moscow has raised allegations against Washington of conducting clandestine bio-research, including potential WMD development and illicit human testing, in a network of labs located across multiple nations, the bulk of which operated in Ukraine. The claims were met with a blanket denial in the West, which repeatedly dismissed them as “Russian propaganda.”

This abruptly changed the past week when US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that her department had identified more than 120 US-funded biological laboratories in 30 countries, with over a third of them located in Ukraine. The agency is now working to “identify where these labs are, what pathogens they contain, and what ‘research’ is being conducted to end dangerous gain-of-function research that threatens the health and wellbeing of the American people and the world,” according to Gabbard.

RT looks back at the timeline of the biolabs saga and the US denial of its existence until now.

2017 RT report 

The US-funded bio research made international headlines in July 2017, when RT published an investigative report revolving around a tender issued by the US Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The command was seeking to procure genetic material samples that “shall be collected from Russia and must be Caucasian.” The Air Force explicitly said that it did not want samples from Ukraine, for reasons not explained.

The harvesting of genetic samples in the country did not escape the attention of the Russian leadership. President Vladimir Putin stated later that year “that biological material is being collected all over the country, from different ethnic groups and people living in different geographical regions.” 

“The question is – why is it being done? It’s being done purposefully and professionally. We are a kind of object of great interest,” the president said. “Let them do what they want, and we must do what we must,” he added.

The attention this garnered from the Russian leadership prompted a vague explanation from AETC, which claimed the samples were needed for research on the musculoskeletal system and Russia had been picked as the source of the samples for no particular reason.

Georgia revelations

Another bombshell on the clandestine US-funded biolabs was dropped by a former Georgian minister for state security, Igor Giorgadze, in late 2018. He claimed he had obtained some 100,000 pages of data pointing to questionable practices at the US-funded Richard Lugar Center for Public Health Research near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

The documents published by Giorgadze were examined by the Russian Defense Ministry, which suggested the laboratory in Georgia may have conducted bioweapons research under the guise of a drug test. The research resulted in the deaths of at least 73 subjects over a short period of time, the Russian military’s investigation indicated.

The tests appeared to involve “a highly toxic chemical or biological agent with a high lethality rate,” the commander of Russia’s Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces (RKhBZ), Igor Kirillov, said at the time. Kirillov, who had spearheaded the Russian military’s probe into the US-funded biolabs in Ukraine and beyond, was assassinated in late 2024 in a bombing staged by Kiev’s intelligence.

The Pentagon flatly denied the allegations, with then-spokesman Eric Pahon dismissing the Russian ministry’s statements as a part of “a Russian disinformation campaign directed against the West.” The US and Georgian governments also dismissed the claims made by Giorgadze, describing them as “absurd.”

Ukraine conflict 

The escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022 marked a new turn in the biolabs saga. While Moscow seized additional evidence of questionable research activities conducted in secretive facilities dotting Ukraine, the West entered a full-denial mode, bluntly dismissing any Russian statement on the matter as “propaganda.”

Early in the conflict, Russian troops seized thousands of pages of documents from labs in the Donetsk, Lugansk, and Kherson regions. The Russian military has been releasing the materials in batches while continuing an internal investigation and ultimately concluding in 2023 that “the US, under the guise of ensuring global biosecurity, conducted dual-use research, including the creation of biological weapons components, in close proximity to Russian borders.”

“The credibility of information provided by the Kremlin is in general very doubtful and low,” EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano said at the time. “Russian disinformation has a track record of promoting manipulative narratives about biological weapons and alleged ‘secret labs.’”

The Biden administration took a similar defensive stance, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki calling the allegations “preposterous” and accusing Moscow of plotting to use “chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine or to create a false flag operation using them.” John Kirby, then-Pentagon spokesman, also branded the Russian allegations “absurd,” “laughable,” and a “bunch of malarkey.” 

“There’s nothing to it. It’s classic Russian propaganda,” Kirby told reporters at the time.

Gabbard’s remarks this past week have reignited scrutiny of a program Washington spent years denying existed.

CIA v. USA?

    The recent attack by Ukraine deep into Russia raises many questions.  First, it was amazingly successful.  About a third of Russia's strategic bombers were attacked on the ground, safe Russian ground, remote from any borders.  Drones were the culprits, we are told.  Ukraine takes the credit.

   War inspires invention.  The American Civil War produced an early submarine that damaged a larger ship.  The Gatling gun, an early version of the machine gun, gave a preview of what later versions would do in WWI to provide great advantage to the defenders, resulting in the widespread use of trench war fare, and huge losses of men to capture small areas of territory.  The use of hot-air baloons to lift observers to better see the surrounding terrain was used in varous 19th century conflicts, but was now being replaced by airplanes, which began to add guns so they could do more than observe.  Poison gas killed on both sides.  Zeppelins bombed enemy cities.

   The tanks moved ahead despite the machine guns, and the static war of trenches was replaced by the lightning (fast) war of tanks in WWII.  Planes could shoot more and bomb more, radar helped, and bombs grew in size.  U-Boots  could hide under water longer. The Russians developed a heavier, beter armored tank with heavier fire-power, the Germans lost the Battle of Kursk, and the war in Europe.  The A-Bomb swept rhe Japanese Asian Empire into a vast nuclear cloud of death.  The war in Ukraine saw tanks of both sides stopped by drones.  What else could they do?  Recent tanks, recent fighter jets, disabled by cheap drones!  Apartment houses defaced and usually a few tenants killed by drones.

   Both Russia and Ukraine sent their drones into the territories of their opponents,  Then the REAL SURPRISE attack by Ukraine destroying rail bridges and Russia's strategic bombers.  Could Ukraine have done this alond.  Steve Bannon asserts that American intelligence services must have been involved to provide information on Russian bomber whereabouts.  American intelligence services and devices would have been required.  In taking out so many of Russia's strategic bombers, in one swoop, this, argues Bannon, was an act of war; and our intelligence was deeply involved.

   Did Trump know about this planned sneak attack?  Was he informed?  Did he approve?  Trump had been calling for the end of the war; he ran for President speaking of ending the war quickly.  The American intelligence agencies are usually globalists, anti-MAGA, pro-Democrats, as exposed by 51 leaders of the US intelligence community signing an over lie just prior to the 2020 Presidential election; they said that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation.  This was meant to let Hunter, AND JOE BIDEN off the hook of sizable corruption with China, implications.  The agencies urged Google and other big tech corporations to discount the laptop story, thereby helping Biden defeat Trump.

   Was the Ukrainian drone raid simply meant to show that the Ukraine was still capable of fighting?  Or an attempt to sabotage Trump's peace efforts?  It is possible Trump had become with Putin's delays of negotiation and therefore Trump gave his approval of the drone killing the bomber plans.  OR Trump may have been ignored or even defied; if they went ahead without his green light.

   Who runs America?  We elect Presidents and Congress; but who makes the final decisions?  It is not a new problem.  The agencies had their say in 1963 in Dallas.  Trump has had to survive a Butler, PA, assassin, and another in Florida with Ukrainian connections.

   One hopes Trump will bring Peace to Ukraine and other areas, and peace and prosperity to America.  One hopes the agencies will not stage another coup.

   Trump is an admirer of Israel's Iron Dome that protects the small nation from missiles from Iran, Yemen, and other hostile nations and territories.  Trump wants a Golden Dome to protect from Greenland to Alaska, Canada and the USA, a vast defensive dome to prevent missiles coming in to destroy our defences and cities.  Question - with drones a new and effective method of war, can drones simply slip in below the Dome and do all the damage they want???  Are Domes practical defences any more?  In the new age of the drone, can America rely on a Dome??  Hugh Murray

Ukraine promotes neo-Nazi unit commander

Azov’s Denis Prokopenko will soon lead five more brigades, the National Guard has announced

The Ukrainian National Guard has announced that the commander of the notorious neo-Nazi Azov brigade, Colonel Denis ‘Redis’ Prokopenko, will be promoted, significantly increasing his troop command.

Originally formed as a volunteer unit of radical nationalists, Azov rose to prominence in Ukraine following the 2014 Western-backed coup, reportedly becoming a central part of an international white supremacist network.

The Ukrainian government incorporated it into the National Guard the same year.

In an interview on Thursday, National Guard Commander General Aleksandr Pivnenko announced that Prokopenko would lead a new corps, which will encompass Azov along with four additional brigades. 

In 2022, the Ukrainian government and its Western allies positioned Azov members as the public face of the resistance against Russia, particularly during their doomed defense of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.

The Soviet-era facility was surrendered in May 2022. While Kiev has denied the existence of radical extremists in its military ranks, many Azov POWs were found with Nazi-themed tattoos.

Four months later, Prokopenko and other Azov leaders were transferred to Türkiye as part of a mediated prisoner exchange. Ankara initially planned to detain them until the conclusion of the conflict, although they were released back to Ukraine the following year.

Azov troops and their families have received a hero’s welcome at some of the most prestigious Western institutions, including Stanford University. Their lobbying efforts featured a rebranding, replacing the unit’s original insignia inspired by the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol with a less controversial logo.

Moscow has accused Western governments of ignoring the prevalence of neo-Nazi ideology among Ukrainian nationalists and their influence within the military. As of March, Russian courts had convicted over 140 Azov members for various offenses, while the unit itself is designated as a terrorist organization in Russia.

My Comment, not in RT.  I am no expert on the area, but most Western books maintain that Stalin was especially brutal to Ukraine.  What had been the "bread basket of Europe" was to be transformed into collectivized farming, and the landowners who opposed yielding their profitable lands, the Kulaks, soon became the "enemy of the people's organizations and the Communist Party.  How many had all their crops taken while they starved, or were shot, or sent to Siberia for re-education?  Estimates vary from a million up to 9 million in 1932-34.  Some call it a genocide.  Certainly this was one reason that when Hitler invaded the area, many Ukrainian's chose the side of Hitler rather than Stalin.  It was monster v. monster, Godzillq v. King Kong.  One large population in the area had not choice, the Jews.  By this time it was known what would be their fate in a Hitler victory.  But non-Jewish Ukrainians, and indeed other Europeans, could choose the Nazi side of the   World War, as for many, it would be better than life under Stalin.  This is made visual in the film "Europa, Europa!"  In the film, Hitler has invaded  Poland a few weeks prior, and the film show many people swimmin across the river to the East, to flee the Germans.  Suddenly, while some still swim East, many have turned round to swim Westward!  "What has happened?"  The Russians just invaded from the East.  Poles, choosing which monster to flee too, Stalin in the East, Hitler in the West.  I assume most Jewish swimmers continued Eastward.  In the early 1940s many Ukrainians were quite willing to fight for their "liberators," the Germans. And at war's end, many Russians would view them as traitors, and Jews as murderers. Putin prbably see Ukrain as a treasonous province of Russia. But the worst of these events occurred 70, 80, 90 years ago.  How long to grieve; time to forgive and forget. 

  Happily, in the US, we had other choices.  During the Cold War, the US agencies may have supported the anti-Stalinist (pro-Azov faction).  And again in 2014.  But I am no expert on the area.  However, it is a sick game to play, oh, my holocaust was bigger than yours.  If there is to be peace, people must move on, try to understand all sides, and forgive as best you can. BLUFF OR NO BLUFF? WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES?

 When the Soviets did not send troops to arrest protestors and thereby defend the Wall, and then the wall came down, there were verbal assurances that NATO would not move into Eastern Europe. Poland, and other former Warsaw Pact nations were soon enrolled in NATO, including Estonia, and Latvia, isolating Kaliningrad. In 2014 the Orange Revolution (aided by Victoria Neuland and US Dept of State and its NGOs, and soon the US Dept of Defense had a dozen biolabs in Ukraine. Some contend that the Russian speaking areas of E Ukraine were suffering discrimination. Next the invasion, and a limited war. Putin has warned, if NATO permits long range missiles to fire deeep into Russia, a red line will be crossed, and nuclear weapons may be unleashed. Bluff?

 Nuland comments on potential official NATO deployment to Ukraine

The presence of Western instructors would “directly implicate” the US-led bloc, the former official has said

Former US diplomat Victoria Nuland has argued that officially sending Western instructors into Ukraine would create unnecessary risks – as NATO already provides a “huge amount” of training for Kiev’s forces on member states' territory.

Facing a severe troop shortage, Kiev has allegedly asked the US and NATO to help train some 150,000 new recruits inside Ukraine, so they can be sent to the front faster, the New York Times reported last week.

In an interview with ABC on Sunday, Nuland – who was responsible for Ukraine in her State Department role and served as US ambassador to NATO – acknowledged Russia’s renewed offensive is making it hard for Ukrainian troops to “come off the front” and train abroad. However, she warned against sending Western instructors in.

“I worry that NATO training bases inside Ukraine will become a target for Vladimir Putin. And it does directly implicate NATO on the ground, which could… escalate the war in a different direction and cause Putin to think that NATO territory might be fair game for him,” Nuland said.

The White House has repeatedly insisted that it will not deploy American troops – even instructors – in Ukraine. The retired US diplomat argued that “it still makes most sense to do most of the training outside of Ukraine but to give advice inside Ukraine.”

The US-led military bloc has been training Ukrainian soldiers on the territory of member states including the UK, Germany and Poland, teaching them how to use Western-provided weapons. European officials have previously acknowledged the presence of some military personnel in Ukraine since the outbreak of the conflict in 2022, without clarifying whether they were training local forces.

However, on Monday Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas claimed that military personnel from some NATO member states are already training Ukrainian soldiers inside the country. She insisted this will not lead to a direct confrontation with Russia because the personnel are doing it “at their own risk.”

French President Emmanuel Macron first raised the issue of sending NATO troops to Ukraine back in February, calling it an idea that should not be ruled out. Estonia and Lithuania have since expressed support for either sending instructors or support troops, to free up Ukrainian soldiers for combat duty. 

In early May, the Russian Defense Ministry estimated that Ukrainian military losses had surpassed 111,000 this year alone. Kiev now intends to mobilize hundreds of thousands of additional troops under a new law cracking down on draft avoidance.

Over the past six weeks, Russian forces have taken more territory than Ukraine managed to capture in the six months of its failed counter-offensive last year, the Washington Post admitted last week, citing numbers from the Institute for the Study of War, a DC-based think tank run by Kimberly Kagan – Victoria Nuland’s sister-in-law.

Nuland's husband, Robert Kagan has a new book out in 2024 in which he views the Trump voters (and Trump) as threats to democracy in America. Yet, as Elon Musk just pointed out, it is President Aelensky of the Ukraine who has cancelled presidential elections in his nation that were scheduled for this year. Zelensky has had political opponents arrested, and critical media squelched. But American Pres. Biden and Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives assure us we are spending billions in Ukraine to defend democracy. I forget whether the Speaker is Mike Johnson or Hakeem Johnson. Of course, RT has its prejudices.  But surely in this case, those prejudices allow it to expose important facts that America's major media prefer to hide.  First, it is most likely that the Covid virus that killed so many thousands world wide was developed as part of a gain-of-function research in a Wuhan lab funded by America's Dr. Fauci.  We know  less about the dozen or so biolabs in Ukraine sponsored by the US ept. of Defense.  Below, Robert Kennedy Jr on the topic.    Hugh Murray

Kennedy comments on US biolabs in Ukraine

The US military outsourced some of its biological weapons research to the government installed by the 2014 coup in Kiev, Democrat presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Junior has claimed in an interview.

“We have biolabs in Ukraine because we’re developing bioweapons,” RFK Jr. told independent journalist Tucker Carlson in a lengthy conversation posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening. Though the US signed the ban on bioweapons in the 1970s, he explained, the Patriot Act adopted after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 allowed the Pentagon to resume research.

According to Kennedy, the bioweapons program has operated under the guise of “life sciences” research, such as gain-of-function experiments on viruses and other pathogens, ultimately overseen by Dr. Anthony Fauci, who headed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases between 1984 and 2022.

Modern bioweapons are “frightening stuff,” made with genetic engineering tools such as CRISPR, Kennedy said. When some of these “bugs” escaped from laboratories in the US, back in 2014, the Obama administration banned gain-of-function research, Kennedy added, so Fauci outsourced it overseas. 

“A lot of them went to Ukraine,” Kennedy told Carlson, while some of the research was moved to the Wuhan, China laboratory, the suspected origination point for the Covid-19 pandemic. Most of the research was funded by the Pentagon, or by USAID, which Kennedy described as “a CIA cutout.”

The US has long dismissed claims about the biological research laboratories in Ukraine as “Russian propaganda,” until senior State Department official Victoria Nuland confirmed their existence at a 2022 Senate hearing. The Pentagon continues to insist the research is neither illegal nor intended for military purposes.

The Russian military has discovered evidence that the US was creating “biological weapons components” at facilities in Ukraine, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov testified to lawmakers in Moscow earlier this year.

Kennedy also told Carlson that the American public has been “lied to” about the Ukraine conflict, pointing out Nuland’s role in the 2014 coup in Kiev and the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) vision of NATO expansion to argue that war with Moscow has been Washington’s plan all along.

Ukraine “is a proxy in, essentially, a struggle between two superpowers, between Russia and the US,” Kennedy said. He accused the US of sabotaging the March 2022 peace talks by having then-British PM Boris Johnson visit Kiev and tell Vladimir Zelensky’s government the West would not support them. 

As a result, Kennedy said, “350,000 Ukrainian kids are now dead, and 40-50,000 Russians.”

RFK Jr. is the nephew of the 35th president, John F. Kennedy, and the son of Robert Kennedy, JFK’s attorney general who went on to become a senator. Both brothers would end up being assassinated – JFK in 1963, and RFK in 1968 during the presidential primaries. RFK Jr. is challenging fellow Democrat and incumbent president Joe Biden for the party’s presidential nomination.
