RETIRED PEOPLE HAVE SO MUCH TIME. WHAT DO THEY DO WITH ALL THAT TIME?

ONE DAY (Friday 18 May 2024) by Hugh Murray

Today I was up early (how I hate that, because mostly I go to bed at 2am or a little alter.  Because I had a doctor's appointment I went to bed a little earlier, 1:45am.  Up at 7, got to the doc's office by 9:45.  I have to go about every 6 weeks to receive an injection in my right eyeball.  I had an aneurism inside the eyeball several years ago and the vein can flare up and distort vision greatly.  The shot seems to keep it smaller.  They must numb the eyeball first, and that will last up to 2 hours.  After, the eye begins to run, and it affects the right sinus, so then my right nostril runs.  I use a kleenex on my eye, then on my nose, then on my eye then on...This can go on for hours so forget about reading or doing anything on these shot days.

It was a beauriful sunny day, but I had brought a removable sunglass attachment that fits on my regular glasses, because walking in the sun hurts my eyes on such days.  I planned to go to the supermarket while the eye was still numbed.  From home to doc's, to supermarket 2 miles, and from supermarket to return home, another 2 miles.  I was there and back weekly with my groceries.

With warm weather, I wanted to buy some cheap sodas.  In my neighborhood a 2-liter 7-Up is $3.20 or so, but Kroger had 4 2-liter sodas for $5.    The problem, each bottle is slightly over 4 pounds weight.  Bought a half-price pastry, and 4 2liter bottles of Kroger diet lemon soda (7 Up) and Kroger Diet Soda.  Decades ago I would walk home with 3 such bottles in one hand, and the groceries in another, but have  not done that in years.  Am I up to it?  Put 3 in plastic bag in my right hand, one and the pastry in the left. Sun glass to protect my eye.  Gloves were not used so much weight, and my fingers were hurting.  Half way, at Red Arrow Park, sat on a bench. moved 1 bottle from my right hand bag and placed it in my rucksack (backpack), drank a swig or 2 of water, and moved on.  On Wells Street, across from the Milw Public Library, had to stop under a tree, and rest a minute.  Then made it back home.  Normally, I do not stop at all but normally I am not carrying so many liquids.  Age makes a difference.

Home sweaty home, by 1:30pm.  Took off most sweaty clothing, AND for first time this year, opened a window a few inches.  Eye was tearing, so rather than sit around with klenex all afternoon, took 2 aspirin and some water, and slept till 5;30.  Rather than a big meal, decided on soup and toast with butter.  Kroger vege beef soup on the fire, 2 slices of toast in the toaster, butter in microwave at 9 seconds to soften it.  Plugged it in, and it blew a fuse or something in the micro.  And it's almost new, I bought it in 2009 (or earlier).

Ate half the soup and the toast/butter, and some pudding to which I added cottage cheese, and for a final snack, pretzels for salt. especially after sweating so much.  I can watch tv, but not too much computer as the brighter light annoys my eyes after the shot.
I made it through another day.  When you get to be 85, that is an accomplishment.   Hugh

SOME ODD THOUGHTS - NOT MY USUAL BLOG POSTS

Socrates, condemned to death by the people of his city.  Friends worked to help, and suddenly he had a  choice, a chance to run away.  Socrates is by now old, and rather than run, chooses to stay and drink the prescribed hemlock.  He assured his students that he is more than a physical body, and his ideas will live on.  But he did have a choice.  Was this suicide?

Young woman, pregnant, boyfriend does not want it, pressure to abort; parents against. she is confused. Her boyfriend, angry, nasty, why doesn't she get the operation?  Slams the door, gone.  She cries.  Looks at her phone, takes many sleeping pills.  Looks at her phone again, decides to call her mom, lifts her phone, it slips from her fingers.  She never wakens.  Is this suicide?

Jesus brought before Jewish high priests, accused of blasphemy, he clams to be a Messiah, healed on the sabbath, drove demons from a woman, causes confusion among the faithful.  Jesus now  puts upa poor and no defense, mainly silent, or retorts, You have said it, with their own accusation.  Next day, brought before Pilate, the Roman governor.  Again the accused is silent.  The people demand the death penalty.  The verdict is carried out, and Jesus is crucified, along with 2 others.  He dies on the cross.  According to many Christians, Jesus was the Son of God, with powers of God.  If he had the power to stop the crucifixion, and did not do so, was this a suicide?

I have lived a long life, and have crossed many bridges.  I have also burnt my bridges behind me.  Now, when things go awry, I no longer have a bridge to jump from.       Perhaps, this is a good thing.

After the crucifixions of the 3, the body of Jesus was taken to the large tomb of a wealthy sympathizer.  There were other caskets in the large tomb some relatives of the gentleman, some from before he purchased it.  To protect them all, when finishing the process of the body, a large stone was placed to close the tomb. and night had already fallen.  A few followers of the heretic, mainly women arrived outside the tomb, and prayed.  The dark clouds of the day had blown away, and the moon shone brightly above the deserted area.  All was quiet.  Suddenly, some thought they heard, like a stone or something quite heavy move.  One woman praying; gasped, and others woke.  Now they all heard more movement.  Then they saw, a hand now outside engaged in pushing the huge stone aside.  The heartbeats of the followers were racing, and their faces filled with amazement.  Then one man shouted - NO! And began to run away.  Soon, all were following the man running, some almost tripping with their garments.  The man who emerged from the tomb was surprised, and wondered, were they expecting me?  Why did they run?  I am back, Drac, he coughed to get some of the dust from his throat, as he'd been asleep for a decade.  He thought, I must go hunting soon to quench my thirst before the sunrise.

This is my homage to E,C. comic books that I read as child/young teen.  They were sometimes, mere ok, but sometimes quite thought provoking.----HUGH MURRAY

Another anecdote.  It was about my first year at Tulane U. and I was in a class studying the German language.  Our professor, U. Fehlau, was discussing Goethe's Faust, the Prolog as I recall, where God and the Devis converse.  At some point, God laughs.  Fehlau then remarked, how unusual, for we never think of God laughing.  I then blurted out for all to hear, that is so we can distinguish Him from Santa Claus.  The professor began to breathe heavily, and said slowly, Mr. Murray.

In my junior year, probably around spring 1959, I entered the university oratory contest.  My title, "Look Not to Outer Space."  I discussed some recent films in which world peace was brought about either by the good advice of friendly visitors from other worlds, or earthlings united to fight hostile invaders from outer space.  My point was if we earthlings were to have peace, we would have to work for it ourselves, and not count on aid from other planets on from the heavens.  I won the gold medal.  I may have been ahead in the notty trend, which reached its crescendo during John Kennedy's 1961 inauguration, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

THE 3 LATEST COUPS IN AMERICA

On 13 April 2024, Steve Bannon's "War Room" Saturday morning session was devoted to the 3 Coups in recent American history.  The first was a discussion of a new book, The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy: The Final Analysis: Forensic Analysis of the JFK Autopsy X-Rays Proves Two Headshots from the Right Front and One from the Rear, by David W. Mantik M.D., Ph.D. (Author), Jerome R. Corsi Ph.D. (Author), Introduction by Douglas P. Horne.  Bannon's guest for the first half hour of the program was one of the authors, Dr. Corsi.  He contended that using the latest methods to re-examine the evidence of John Kennedy's head, there was little doubt that an autopsy preceded the official one, and alterations were made by physicians to make it appear as if all shots came from behind.  If front shots were admitted, there there must have been a conspiracy, and the Bethesda doctors did not want that conclusion to be obvious to the American public.  So there was a conspiracy to assassinate Pres. John Kennedy, and one to cover it up.  This was the first coup discussed on Bannon's program.

The 2nd coup was related to another new book, The Truth About Watergate: A Tale of Extraordinary Lies & Liars, by Nick Bryant.  The author was guest on Bannon's 2nd half hour.  Bryant argued that the release  of papers of many involved in the Watergate scandals in recent years prove that the Watergate law-suits and convictions of men connected to the Nixon White House, eventually isolated the President and caused him to resign.  More important, Bryant found considerable collusion between prosecutors, judges, and the media.  Bannon declared this was a prelude to the lawfare that we witness against former Pres. Trump today.

The 3rd coup is the lawfare against Trump.  The Bannon program was fascinating and thought-provoking.   However, I would disagree with his choice of words, for I think it distorts.  In the Watergate burglary, one name stood out in my mind - E. Howard Hunt.  He had already been discussed as a possible member of the conspiracy to murder John Kennedy.  If Hunt was now working for the White House, it raised a sinister cloud around Nixon,  While the coup against Kennedy undoubtedly included military, CIA, J. Edgar Hoover, Vice President Johnson and others, this crowd was quite happy with Nixon in office.  What happened against Nixon was a counter-coup, those fearful of the elements round Nixon, some of whom may have acted in the first coup.  The counter coup against Nixon would include liberals generally, which meant academia, the media, and enough prosecutors and judges to sway the public that there was something wrong at the heart of the Nixon Presidency.  With enough popular support for his ouster, Nixon caved and resigned.

The 3rd, and on-going coup against Trump is different.  The military is  no longer what it was in the days of Curtiss Le May, and the CIA, FBI and other agency heads are now good liberals or further to the left.  For example, former Director of the CIA, John Brennan, voted in the 1876 Presidential election for Gus Hall, candidate of the Communist Party, USA.  Many newer leaders of intelligence and military groups were now globalists, looking with disdain at the provincial views of their predecessors.  The coup against Trump began before he entered the White House in 2016, when the FBI interviewed Gen. Flynn in order to entrap him, and prevent Trump's designated appointee for intelligence, to be appointed.  Flynn's career was derailed so he could never take office and fire many of the new globalist liberal agency heads.  Members of the FBI also used fabricated stories accusing Trump of Russian collusion, using FISA courts, and then a Special Prosecutor to promote this well-publicized accusation during half of Trump's first term in order to sabotage his Presidency.  As Trump ran for office again in 2020, this time against former VP Joe Biden, in October just before the election, the NY Post released the story of the Hunter Biden lap-top, drug dealing, corruption with his dad, and all the other details with photos; immediately 51 leaders of our intelligence agencies declared the lap-top was Russian disinformation!  Without studying it - they signed this statement, this lie, just because they wanted to prevent Trump from winning a 2nd term.  This coup, still going on as lawfare, includes the liberals, the globalists, the endless war crowd, and the replace Americans in America with a more docile new immigrant population.  In November 2024, we shall see if America continues as an independent nation, or a satellite of international organizations, dominated by China and the other dictatorships.  The choice is ours!

ON THE RETURN OF DAN RATHER TO CBS TELEVISION

Newser reports that after a 2 decade hiatus, former CBS anchor of its nightly newscast, Dan Rather, will return to the network on a Sunday morning program.  He had been caught in using questionable documents to challenge the accuracy of George Bush's service in the National Guard.  I know little of that controversy, and say nothing about that.  However, what about Rather's other reportage?  Below is the comment which I just left on the Newser comment site.  Hugh Murray

Dan reported what the govt wanted. He was one of the first to meet with Zapruder and watch the film of the assassination, and Rather assured his TV audience that JFK's head went forward due to the shot to his head coming from behind. A new book by Mantik and Corsi confirms that the head shots came from the front, and that is why Jackie had to pick up a piece of her husband's brains from the back of the limo. It took the brave NO DA, Jim Garrison,  to show the by then hidden Zapruder film to a court room in New Orleans to show JFK's head moves backward, confirming the Parkland Hospital accounts that the throat wound and perhaps other wounds came from the front.

Rather reported what the govt wanted, and would readily lie to achieve its ends. US agencies worked with many reporters during the Cold War. Was Rather one, too? Rather, like the other major anchors, all promoted the Lee Oswald, lone assassin, fantasy.

And to bring that story up-to-date, during this past week at one  of the trials of former President Trump, we learn that the editor of the National Enquirer, a friend of Mr. Trump, paid some women for their stories of sex with Trump, paid big figures by the way, and then the stories were not published at all, killed, so few would hear about the claims (whether true of false).  Some probably see this as proof of Trump's guilt of something.  Or not?

Back to Dan Rather - he was one of the first to contact Zapruder, the only person in Dealy Plaza filming the motorcade when the shots rang out.  Rather reported Kennedy's head went forward during the fatal shot(s).  As I recall, the film was purchased by Time Corp. and printed in its sister picture magazine, Life.  If I recall correctly, some of the pictures were printed out of order.  This was not detected immediately, but only after people began to question the official version of the assassination.  But after that, the Zapruder film was not shown, not on the CBS, NBC, or ABC news programs.  It was like one of the stories of the women who wanted $ from Trump.  Their stories had been killed; and so had the Zapruder film.  A few illicit copies seem to have gotten out.  The first showing of the Zapruder film, real or illicit, was that shown in court by DA Jim Garrison in New Orleans during the trial of Clay Shaw.  News reporters from all over the world were covering the trial and could see the film that had been killed so the American people could not see it.  And what did they see?  Kennedy's head may have moved slightly forward, but for the fatal shot(s), Kennedy's head was thrust backward.  This is why Jackie Kennedy had to crawl atop the back trunk to scoop up some of her husband's brain - rather than her going forward to find remnants of JFK.  Did Rather lie to the American people about the film?  Because the Zapruder film showed Kennedy's head thrusting backwards, is this why it disappeared from tv until the Garrison trial?  I suspect that many of the people who decry the suppression of the stories of the women who accuse Trump, are also those who would support the govt suppression of the Zapruder film, achieved indirectly through Time, as later done indirectly through Mr Pecker at National Enquirer.

PRES. BIDEN IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA

The mis-named Democratic Party is already planning to undermine a fair election this November. Their Attorneys General often try to kick Trump of the ballot, as if he had been an official in the Confederate government. In 2020 the Dems had their special lawyers kick the Green Party and Kanye West off the ballot in swing states. Now they will do every trick possible to prevent Kennedy Jr. from getting on the ballot, especially in swing states. So the Democratic Party works to keep Trump off the ballot, keep Kennedy, Jr. off the ballot, keep the Green Party off the ballot, etc., so your choice this November should be Biden and some Biden approved opponents. Just like Putin had his election this year in Russia, where Navalny was in jail and then dead, and other opponents were kicked off the ballot, and only the approved opposition was on the ballot against Putin. Putin won with 80% of the vote. That is what the Democrats want here. The Democratic Party is an enemy of democracy.

In some Democratic run states and cities, officials seek to register illegal aliens.  Sometimes they allege it is only to vote in school board elections where the illegals have children in school.  But are there really separate voting rolls?  No.  The purpose is to register non-citizens so they can swell the Democratic Party vote.  Can it make a difference?  There were estimates of 800,000 who could be registered in New York State alone.  Bad enough that our citizen taxpayers are paying for the education of the illegals.  Worse, when they graduate, if they are people of color, the illegals may well receive an affirmative action preference over a white or Asian American citizen.  Why do people who invade our country receive preferences over American citizens?  The invader is invited to the head of the line for jobs, promotions, scholarships, admissions, while the American citizens are pushed further and further behind.  How can this happen?  Because the invaders are more likely to vote Democrat, to vote for Biden, than American citizens.

Pres. Biden aids and abets a foreign invasion of the United States. That is why we have open borders.  This helps the long-range goals of the Democrats, and Biden in the short run.  It is still treason.  Traitor Joe is a danger to democracy and to American citizens.

One need not agree with Trump on all issues, or even on many issues, to see the danger to the country if Biden and the Democrats win in November 2024.   -------Hugh Murray

VDARE SITE TO CLOSE BECAUSE OF NY STATE PROSECUTION OF FREE SPEECH

The VDARE site is being shut down due to the actions of the NY State Democrats, and especially Atty Gen. Letitia James, who is also among the many Democrats prosecuting former President Donald Trump.  They do not want an opposition party to exist.  They do not want free speech to criticize their policies.  They do  not want to allow anyone to contend elections are stolen.  They do not want Brimelow to continue to criticize the Democrats open border policies on immigration.  If you do criticize them, your site is not #1 when you google it - that spot goes to the Southern Poverty Law Center to warn you not to read the VDARE site..  And read below on what NY is doing to the leader of VDARE. ---Hugh Murray   The following comes from VDARE

VDARE.com Editor Peter Brimelow writes:

I launched VDARE.com on Christmas Eve 1999. So it is perhaps appropriate that, on Good Friday 2024, the anniversary of Christ’s death,  I must announce VDARE.com’s crucifixion by New York State’s communist Attorney General Letitia James.

On March 27 2024, in another of her lightning-fast NYAG James-compliant rulings, New York State Supreme Court Judge Sabrina Kraus held us in Contempt  Of Court because we have not yet complied (because we were fighting it) with her January 23 2023 order that we meet NYAG James’ massive and crippling subpoena demands.

Judge Kraus did modify her earlier order to reflect the intervention (much appreciated) of the Institute for Free Speech. So now we no longer have to reveal, explicitly, the names of our pseudonymous writers, some of whom would certainly be fired from their jobs if their identities leaked.

But we are still required to review 40 gigabytes of emails, an enormous amount. And of course these would  in fact reveal the names of those pseudonymous writers, as well as our donors, privileged communications with lawyers etc.

Judge Kraus has also now allowed us to redact these emails. But this is a huge task, which our lawyers estimate could cost as much as $150,000.

An observer tells us this order is more typical of major corporate litigation, not a tiny charity.

And, perversely, although Judge Kraus has now modified her January 23 2023 order, she is nevertheless now fining us $250 a day for not complying with it.

We have fought NYAG Letitia James, at a cost of up to $1 million, for nearly three years. But now we are literally hanging on the cross.

REMEMBER, VDARE.com HAS NOT BEEN CHARGED WITH ANYTHING—BECAUSE IT IS NOT GUILTY OF ANYTHING.

FROM RT - A HERO OF THE MOSCOW TERROR ATTACK - THE 15-YEAR-OLD WHO SAVED 100, NAME: ISLAM KHALILOV

Hero teen helped over 100 to safety during Moscow terrorist attack

Islam Khalilov, who worked part-time at the Crocus City Hall, led panicked concertgoers to safety amid Friday’s shooting spree
Hero teen helped over 100 to safety during Moscow terrorist attack

A teenager who led over 100 people to safety during Friday’s terrorist attack at a Moscow concert hall, has been hailed as a hero. 15-year-old Islam Khalilov, who worked part-time in one of the cloakrooms at Crocus City, recounted the events of the tragic evening to the Ruptly video agency.

The concert venue situated just outside of Moscow was packed ahead of a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic, when a group of terrorists armed with assault rifles forced their way into the building. They fired indiscriminately at fleeing people and then set the concert hall on fire.

According to the latest estimates, the attack has claimed the lives of at least 137 people, with about 180 injured.

Khalilov told the video agency that “it was when people started running from the escalator, from the stairway” that he realized that an emergency was occurring. The teenager said that he was acting on “instincts” at the time and used his thorough knowledge of the premises to quickly arrange visitors’ evacuation toward another building within the Crocus City complex.

“I started shouting all across the foyer, all across Crocus City Hall - ‘Folks, there’s a shooting! All run to the expo!’ – and I was showing where they had to go and was helping everyone,” he explained.

According to the cloakroom attendant, “there was a stampede, and everyone was in shock at first. No one knew what to do and where to go.”

Khalilov added that he himself was running behind the entire group to make sure he had not left anyone behind.

The teenager admitted to being “really scared” all along, but still managed to make the right use the instructions he’d previously been given on how to evacuate patrons in case of an emergency.

He told Ruptly that, at one point, he had caught a glimpse of one of the terrorists.

“I saw one, [he was] bearded and in green fatigues, he was walking around with an assault rifle,” the teenager recounted.

He also recalled seeing a man getting fatally shot by one of the assailants, adding that he “can’t stop thinking about it.”

The 15-year-old said he doesn’t consider himself a hero, and that he was just doing his job.

Explaining what helped him overcome fear, Khalilov reasoned that “It’s better to sacrifice yourself than to let a hundred people die.”

After Khalilov’s feat had been reported-on by several Russian media outlets, his favorite football club, FC Spartak Moscow, invited him to a meeting where he was presented with free passes to their matches.

Popular Russian rap artist Morgenstern said he had transferred 1,000,000 rubles ($11,000) to the teenager – something that Khalilov has confirmed to media.

The leader of Russia's Muslims, Mufti Ravil Guynutdin, has announced that Khalilov would receive a medal for his bravery.

CHANGES IN US CENSUS, AND IN AFFIRMATIVE/NEGATIVE ACTION PROGRAMS

The US Census added some new racial categories, and I made 2 comments.  The second by me is a reply to an earlier poster, who used the name "identical," quoted a statement by a physical anthropologists' organization, one with which that poster agreed.I disagreed with both the poster "Identical" and the anthropological organization he quoted.  As I was not on my computer till late the following morning, I was  too late for much debate on the Newser comment sites.  Hugh Murray

All of this appeared on Newser.

My post:

So, should Jews put down Middle East? The main reason to redefine North African and Middle Eastern, when individuals identify themselves as white, as they might do under the present census definitions, they suddenly face the intense anti-white discrimination imposed by the EEOC and other enforcers of "civil rights," making it much more difficult for "whites" to get jobs and promotions. Now, many "whites" can evade that category.  Legally, they will not have to identify themselves as whites, the most hated category in the new type racist America. Ironically, those Middle Easterners from the Caucasus region is where we get the word Caucasian, meaning the white race. Iranians were known for thousands of years as Persians, but in the Nazi influenced 1930s. tp show that Persians were not Semites, they changed the name of their country to Iran, for they were Aryans. How sad, that the Nazi stress on race and giving race preferences and rewards in the Reich, now occurs daily in the US, the stress on race and giving preferences ("equity") to some, while denying equal rights to others - like white men.

" Identical' had a post to which I replied:  Basically he contended that all the differences between and among races are superficial; we are all one race.  My reply:

Politically correct BS. In medicine, dosages, and remedies these may vary by race, along with problems, diseases and susceptibility to such diseases.. Scientists studying old bones can often identify the sex and race of their owners. The new, politically correct anthropologists may seek to prevent such identification, for it implies the reality of races.  The only reason for such BS attempts to obscure the issue, is that often the common stereotypes of race ARE BASED ON THE BEHAVIOR OF THE GROUPS BEING SO GENERALIZED! Are we not to use our minds to generalize? Apples that look a certain way are often soft, mushy, mealy. Apples that appear another way are more likely to be firmer, sweeter. But liberal scientists, being far more liberal than scientific, try to distort reality by pretending all apples are the same, identical.  In the market, they are apples, but some are fresher, some have been bruised, and you search for the  one you think will taste best, based on your experience.  When Jesse Jackson heard steps behind him on a secluded street one night, he looked behind him and was relieved to see they were young white guys.  Racist?  No, facing reality.  And when objective exams appear to show racial differences in IQ, crime statistics indicate vast difference in criminal behavior of different races, etc. some "scientists" try to hide, obscure, or explain away such differences, or pretend they are insignificant.  Are they?  Are all races identical?  Should they be treated equally?  In a color blind society?  Or with equity?  Giving preferences to those who generally do poorly?

After another attack on that site, I replied on 30 March at 2:30 CDT. -
Iran meaning of the Aryans goes back to the 3rd century, but it did not become the name of the country until Nazi German began to make a big deal of Aryans and Semites. A long time from the 200s AD until the 1930s. All that time known as Persia. Middle East? The Ottomans ruled the Middle East, but just where does it begin and end? Were not Caucasian lands included at various times? Like the Far East, these were fluid terms, that could include this or that land, depending upon who was using the term. Russias borders have shrunk and expanded, as have many lands over time. Will the Census demand that Armenians declare themselves white, or can they claim to be Middle Eastern? Same for Azerbaijanis? The point of the Biden census is to free many people for the intense discrimination of having them classified as whites.

MORE THOUGHTS ON COMMUNIST INFLUENCE IN AMERICA

My previous post on CP influence in the US, brought a few more questions to mind.

1)  Martin Luther King, Jr., was gaining importance in the civil rights movement, and one of his chief advisors was Stanley Levison.  Both Pres. Kennedy and Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy told King to drop Levison, stay away from him because he was a suspected subversive.  King lied, said he would do so, and then continued to remain in contact with his friend and advisor.  Let that seep in.  The President of the US urges King to avoid any more contact with a communist, and King listens, and then ignores/defies the wishes of the leaders of the American government.  King's action speaks - asserting his own independence, and his willingness to hear, confide, befriend, and consider the advise of a possible communist.  What would you do if the President urged you to drop connections with a friend?

2)  In the previous post I mentioned scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project.  What inspired that project?  Who inspired it?  Refugee scientists were worried when they learned that European scientists were moving ahead with discoveries that might lead to an atomic bomb for the Nazi regime in Germany.  Some urged famed scientist, Albert Einstein, to write to President Franklin Roosevelt about the danger if German developed such a weapon, and urged him to promote development of an American weapon.  From this, the Manhattan Project emerged.  We know that Oppenheimer was eventually selected to be the lead scientist on this project.  Why Oppenheimer?  Why NOT Einstein?  Einstein was German, but not loyal the the anti-Jewish Nazi regime.  Indeed, the Nazis had enacted laws removing the citizenship of Jewish Germans.  Einstein had left for a post at Princeton even before Hitler had gained full power.  But Einstein was a left-winger.  He was not considered for the Manhattan Project because he was a security risk.  Yet, Oppenheimer, whose wife was a member of the CP, whose brother was a member of the CP, whose mistress was a member of the CP, and who according to authorities Harvey Klehr and John Earl Haynes, Oppenheimer himself was also a member of the Communist Party in the late 1930s, IS chosen as the lead scientist for the project.  Seems there should be more to this story.

FROM MY FORTHCOMING BOOK - HUGH MURRAY

What do Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Paul Robeson, Lorraine Hansberry, Bayard Rustin, W. E. B. Du Bois, Mrs. Raymond Parks,, and Martin Luther King, Jr. all have in common? Yes, they were all blacks, or Negroes as the more common term used in the earlier era. And many would have had other common experiences, but one I want to stress here – they were all, at some point in their lives, in the orbit of the Communist Party of the USA. My point is that the CPUSA, though a small political party, had influence far beyond its numbers, which at its height, was only 100,000. McKay, a West Indian native who came to the US, in November 1922 traveled to Moscow to present “A Report on the Negro Question” to the 4th gathering of the Comintern (the Communist International). His bitter poem, “If we must die,” had stirred black reaction to continued oppression following victory in the Great War, the war to save the world for democracy. His novels explored race and he then became something of a black nationalist. Four years before his death in 948, Mc Kay was baptized and received into the Roman Catholic Church.

Langston Hughes also wrote some bitter poetry, like “Christ is a n*****,” and a play about the Scottsboro boys facing electrocution because of false accusations of rape in Alabama in the 1930s. Even earlier, in the 1920s Hughes partook in a sit-in in North Carolina. But by the late 1940s, he is denying any connections to the CP. Author Richard Wright, who had portrayed some individual communists heroes in his novels, turned against the party and its ideology, even contributing a chapter to the influential, strongly anti-communist collection, The God that Failed. Robeson had been an all-American football player for Rutgers University in the 19teens while excelling in academia, graduating cum laude. He then earned a law degree from Columbia U., while playing in early professional football leagues. Robeson found limitations in the legal field; he had a bass/baritone voice and sang professionally, performed in the theater more and more, and then in films, singing “Ol Man River” in the 1935 film version of Show Boat. He and his wife lived in Britain as he performed on the stage there, and in British films, where, ruling half of Africa, they wanted films with black stars – and Robeson became one. He met and befriended some film extras, African university students studying in the U.K. But he did not forget America. Robeson and a student, Johnstone Kenyatta, headed the British Scottsboro Defence Committee in Britain. (Somewhat later, Johnstone would later return to his homeland, become known as Jomo, and lead the Mau Mau rebellion against the British in Kenya.) Robeson himself became more political and decided it best if his son grew up without racism, so Paul sent his son to live with his grandmother in Moscow in the late 1930s. The father generally defended anti-colonialist policies, and supported Soviet approaches into the 1940s and during the Cold War.

Lorraine Hansberry used a line from a Hughes' poem as the title of her major play (and film), A Raisin in the Sun. She also wrote for Freedom, the Harlem newspaper founded by Robeson during the Cold War. She became a spokesperson for Southern civil rights activists, when she, other celebrities, and activist Jerome Smith met with Atty. Gen. Robert Kennedy in the early 1960s. Bayard Rustin, from a Quaker family, opposed the war clouds brewing in the late 1930s. When Nazi Germany attacked Poland (usually given as the start of WWII), while most of the West and many Americans supported Britain and the other “democracies,” the CPUSA followed the notions of Moscow, refusing to support the imperialist, colonialist powers (Britain, France, Netherlands, Belgium, and America). To the pacifist, Ruston, this seemed reasonable, and he joined thethen  anti-war Young Communist League. In summer 1941 Hitler attacked the USSR, and suddenly communist policy changed – the “imperialist” powers had to be helped as allies in order to destroy Nazi fascism, the old popular front with liberal democracy was revived to defeat Hitler. The YCL now became all out for support of war, and Rustin ceased to be a part of it. He would continue to protest in various ways, and eventually organize the influential 1963 March on Washington.

Du Bois had supported the drums of the Great War, but soon discovered that Wilson's notion of democracy did not extend to black people. The new NAACP gave him a platform, and provided some national center to fight violent and overt racism. The organization's magazine, The Crisis, was edited by Du Bois, and he wrote much of the material as well. Still, the virulently black nationalist Universal Negro Improvement Assn., founded by a very black Marcus Garvey, won a larger following than did the proper middle-class NAACP. Worse, Garvey made deals with the growing Ku Klux Klan, supported segregation, and even championed a return of Negroes to Africa. Du Bois was certainly not chagrined when the US deported Garvey. In the 1930s Du Bois was critical of the CP, especially in its defense of the Scottsboro boys. Du Bois had hoped to regain control of the defense from the CP, but the boys and their moms chose the communists instead of the NAACP. Du Bois traveled in Germany in the 1930s, and had kind words for the people of color of imperial Japan. But with WWII, he became more anti-imperialist, and certainly more skeptical of the Missouri Democrat, Harry Truman, who became President opon FDR's death in spring 1945. Truman, who had a Confederate heritage, was close to leading segregationists like South Carolina's Jimmy Burns, whom Truman appointed as Sed. of State.  But in 1948, hoping to win another term in office, Truman began to seek black votes, addressed the NAACP, the first President to do so. When Du Bois refused to support Truman and backed a previous FDR VP, Henry Wallace for President in 1948 against Truman, the NAACP fired Du Bois. With that, the NAACP in effect, became a Democratic party front-group.  Truman got further revenge when his Atty. General had Du Bois arrested as a foreign agent in 1950. Just before Du Bois chose to leave the US for the Gold Coast, now independent Ghana, he joined the CPUSA.  Ironically, Du Bois, who had opposed Garvey's Back to Africa campaign of the 1920s, became the most prominent American black to return to Africa in 1961.

Rosa Mc Cauley married Raymond Parks, a barber in Montgomery, Alabama in 1932. The Scottsboro rape cases had become international news, thanks to the International Labor Defense, a CP front organization. Alabama authorities had raided some CP attempts to organize share croppers into unions, and sheriffs and deputies and some of their posses had killed those who dared attend such subversive meetings. Raymond worked with the ILD to bring food and fresh clothing to the 9 jailed black boys. He also had meetings at his home. Rosa was sometimes look-out to warn if any strange cars were coming. With her husband, Rosa Parks also attended some CP meetings.

In 1948 the civil rights movement in the South WAS the Henry Wallace Progressive Party. The 1948 PP was endorsed by the CPUSA. That year, Virginia Durr ran for the US Senate from Virginia on the PP ticket. She and her husband were Alabama natives who had moved to the Washington area when Clifford was appointed to a federal agency in 1933, and they remained during the New Deal era. When FDR sought to gain support in the South (after many in Congress had rejected his court-packing bill), the New Deal sought to promote uplift to the South, the poorest part of the nation. As part of this effort, Eleanor Roosevelt was also involved in the creation of the Southern Conference on Human Welfare, and Virginia Durr was on its civil rights committee. Of course, to many Southerners, integration was communism, or often called race-mixing or mongrelization. Harry Truman's Attorney General would place the SCHW on his list of subversive organizations, so it would be targeted for destruction. Durr did not the Virginia Senate seat she sought. She and Clifford then returned to Alabama, Montgomery. She required a seamstress to help, and then she helped the seamstress get a scholarship to Highlander Folk School in Tennessee, a “progressive” school where one might learn about protest. So seamstress Rosa Parks went. The rest is history.

Martin Luther King, Jr. also attended Highlander. There was a famous photograph taken of him seated beside a member of the CPUSA. If you drove through the South in the 1950s or 60s, you might have seen the bill boards showing King at the "communist" training school. (They may have been the same bill boards that had earlier displayed IMPEACH EARL WARREN signs after the Supreme Court ruled against segregation of the public schools. King was a young minister, thrust into the fire of the Montgomery bus boycott, with all its dangers. If there were threats, there was also help, and one helper became one of King's chief advisors, Stanley Levison. According to the FBI, Levison was s secret member of the CPUSA, and handled some of its hidden funds. Levison was now fund-raising for King. More, he was advising on tactics, writing some of King's speeches, perhaps chapters of his books. Both Pres. John Kennedy and Atty . Gen. Robert Kennedy told (ordered) King to break with Levison. King lied, said he had split with his advisor, but King maintained his contact with the controversial, and quite influential Stanley Levison.

CAN THERE BE ANY DOUBT THAT THE CPUSA HAS HAD GREAT INFLUENCE ON AMERICA?

It was not only blacks who were swayed by the CP. For whites, I shall mention only one name of a person involved in the communist orbit. Some disagree.  However, his wife was a member of the CP; his mistress was also a member of the CP, and his brother was a member of the CP.  Was he in the orbit of the Communist Party?  The man I am referring to is J. Robert Oppenheimer.  With a wife, mistress, and brother all party members, did that color his thinking closer to red?  Moreover, according to an article in the September 2023 Commentary magazine, "Oppenheimer Was a Communist," by Harvey Klehr and John Earl Haynes, not only did J. Robert contribute healthy sums to communist front organizations in the 1930s, they contend that he himself was also a member.  Then, which is it; CP leaders told him to drop out of the organization, for he might have to pass an important security check?  Or he heard of the major scientific project, and on his own, decided to keep a distance from the CP?  He did pass the test, and was soon working in the Manhattan Project.  The rest is history, and a movie.

MICHIGAN PRIMARY RESULTS, FEB. 2024, REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES

Most tv analysts of the primary results miss the obvious, probably because they prefer to not see it.  The following is my comment on Newser re the primaries in Michigan. - Hugh Murray

What most news sources ignore - Biden 620,000; Trump 755,000. Biden had carried Michigan in 2020, according to the "official" count. Most discussion concerns, what will the Haley voters do, and what with the Dem. uncommitted do. The basic vote - Biden, the sitting President, got far fewer votes than Trump, the man he allegedly defeated in Michigan in 2020. I would conclude, not a good omen for Biden for November 2024.

Math Historian Saw Decimals in 1440s Treatise and Freaked Out

Glen Van Brummelen uncovers earliest known use of decimal to indicate base-10 number system

How old is the decimal? It's a question you've probably never pondered but one that has fascinated certain historians. Fascinated isn't overstating it. When Glen Van Brummelen, a historian of mathematics at Canada's Trinity Western University, spotted a decimal used to indicate tenths of a number in a 15th-century treatise while teaching at a math camp for middle schoolers, "I remember running up and down the hallways of the dorm with my computer trying to find anybody who was awake, shouting 'Look at this, this guy is doing decimal points in the 1440s!'" he tells Nature News. This early appearance of such a decimal, it turns out, is a very big deal to math historians. Science Alert calls "a mind-blowing discovery."

While versions of the decimal have been used as far back as the 900s, German mathematician Christopher Clavius was thought to have been the first to break down whole numbers by tenths, hundredths, and thousandths, in a 1593 treatise on the astrolabe, called Astrolabium. What Van Brummelen had discovered was the same usage in a much older text. In the 1440s, European astronomers made calculations using the sexagesimal numeric system of dividing a 360-degree circle into 60 minutes and dividing minutes into 60 seconds. The system uses 60 as its base in the same way our modern decimal system uses 10 as its base, though this makes multiplication difficult, requiring multiple conversions of values, per Nature News.

Giovanni Bianchini, a Venetian merchant who practiced astrology, found a simpler way—one that marked "a step forward for humanity," José Chabás, a historian of astronomy unconnected with the discovery, tells Live Science. It was while reviewing Bianchini's treastise Tabulae primi mobilis B that Van Brummelen and a colleague noticed he was dividing angles into minutes and seconds but giving the values as numbers with decimals using the base-10 system. Van Brummelen, author of a study published online for Historia Mathematica, believes the method originated with Bianchini, who would've learned calculations using real-world measures through his background in economics. Clavius would've been aware of his work, Chabás says. (More mathematics stories.)

My comment:

I know little of the history of the abacus, but I recall on the early days of tv, the race between someone using the abacus and a new machine for adding numbers, and if the person using the abacus lost, it was very close.
Might early abacui been set for a base of 10, or 6? If 10, then special operations might have used the tenth system for fractions, and tenths. Where are there archives that might contain such info? Congrats to the man who found the use of the decimal 150 years earlier than known. And that usage might have come from the Muslims or even the ancient would. But the Asian world might provied an earlier application, but using an early calculating machine.

That's actually interesting. I was reading last month of Anctient Sumeria using Base 12 arithmetic. Much more convenient than 10, as it has more factors.

RUSSIA'S PUTIN FINDS TUCKER CARLSON DANGEROUS

 14 Feb, 2024 21:25

Tucker Carlson ‘is dangerous’ – Putin

The American journalist chose an unexpected tactic for his interview, the Russian president has said
Tucker Carlson ‘is dangerous’ – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted on Wednesday that X host Tucker Carlson caught him by surprise during their interview last week.

The final interview was two hours long and has been seen by hundreds of millions of people. Before it, Carlson was criticized for speaking to Putin at all – and afterwards, for not asking the Russian president certain things.

“I think your Carlson – I say yours, since he’s a member of your profession – is a dangerous man,” Putin told journalist Pavel Zarubin on the sidelines of the Future Technologies Forum in Moscow.

“I thought he would be aggressive, ask me sharp questions. I was not just ready for that, I wanted that, so I could give equally sharp answers,” Putin explained. “But he chose a different tactic.”

Carlson ended up patiently sitting through Putin’s lengthy digression into history and “did not give me an occasion to do something I had prepared for,” Putin said. “Frankly speaking, I did not get the full satisfaction from this interview.”

Commenting on reactions to the interview from the West, Putin said it was a good thing that the leaders there watched and listened to what he had to say – but bad that they felt the need to twist his words.

Asked if Carlson could face reprisals in the West, the Russian president pointed out that WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange “still sits” in a British prison.

While the US has tried to accuse Assange of revealing state secrets, which is more difficult to pin on Carlson, “anything is possible in today’s US,” Putin said. While this kind of persecution would certainly be a bad thing for Carlson himself, it would be good for the world, because it would reveal the true face of the “liberal-democratic dictatorship” embodied by the ruling class in the US, the president concluded.
